A 16-man group of U.S. Generals visited Jon Hospice on the 10th of August, 2010 as part of their orientation programme as stipulated by the American Congress. The team of Generals, of whom 5 were women, was welcomed by the Executive Director Judith Kumwenda and entourage then toured the facility. The tour of the facility (Jon Hospice and the Day Care centre) was led by Ms Emelia Mweemba, the Programme Manager.
Jon Hospice provides the following services:
- - Palliative care and support to chronically and terminally ill patients
- - Education to orphans and vulnerable children
- - Voluntary counselling and testing
- - The outreach programme which has assisted a large number of patients in their homes (Home Based Care) infected with HIV/AIDS
The U.S. Generals, led by Brigadier-General Robin Akin was amazed and impressed with the work the Hospice and the Day Care Centre were doing and handed over the truckload donation of assorted children's toys, balls and other items for children. Other items included slippers, bathing towels, bowls, cups and puzzles for the children. She further stated that the partnership was just a beginning and would continue. Those children present were given assorted toys and balls. With much glee, the children were soon all over their little playground playing football and other games with the Generals giving some quick coaching sessions. It was a very happy and special afternoon, not only for the children but also for the staff and the distinguished visitors.
In thanking the visiting Generals, Executive Director for Kara Counselling and Training Trust Judith Kumwenda thanked the U.S. Generals and the USA government for the support they have continued to render in alleviating the suffering of the many that are infected and affected by HIV/AIDS in Zambia.
